When starting to work on a design project my first step would always be to build a profile of the client and his inner circle. So the typical questions are: Are you right-handed or left-handed? Do you prefer to have breakfast at home or just have dinner? Do you have guests on weekends? What are your hobbies?
What should be considered when designing the apartment of an independent man?
Here you will find the conclusions to which I came when working on bachelor’s projects
Convenience, Practicality, Comfort are three pillars on which such an interior should be based.
A man should not waste his time on daily housekeeping; all the necessary things have to be accessible, with no dust collectors like ruffles, curls, net lace.
It is equally important that the apartment be stylish and comfortable – so that the client and his guests enjoy staying there.
And here’s an example of my project:
Practical solutions
- Although it is quite an occasion to see food in the kitchen, it still takes place at times – so we say a solid “no” to fabrics: a roll system is used as curtains, it is easy to clean, and it completes the room and darkens from light on sunny days. Another suitable option is wooden blinds.
It is crucial to provide space for the roll system already at the construction stage; otherwise, it may not fit during installation. - Bright accents are welcomed; you can use decorative cushions and bedspreads. Such details help to harmonize the space and add warmth and style to it. The design speaks of our style and you always want to bring the girl to a fabulous place. .
- Such interiors well embrace geometrical and abstract textile patterns.
- The color scheme should be adjusted accordingly – delicate pink, lilac and other girlish colors will definitely not work; grey, blue, brown and other male shades will look better.
Common mistakes
- Long curtains that go down to the floor are not practical, they will require additional efforts to maintain tidiness in the apartment, as well as high-pile carpets – it is better to choose small bedside rugs with no pile.“Less is more” is the best solution for bachelor’s apartment – select fine stylish fabrics.
- The design should not be multi-colored, bright accents against the background of softened shades of grey, beige, blue and similar colors from the “masculine” palette still show better taste.
- No to fabric partitions and a canopy over the bed. It looks girlish and is not functional at all.
- No to floral patterns: Provence style is fine for romantic girls, not brutal men.
- For bedspreads, decorative cushions it is better to use non-soiled, easy-care fabrics.
